Much Needed Rain

It finally rained.

We finally received some much needed rain here in Central Texas and the Austin area. Although it won’t make up for the current drought conditions in the area, it certainly helps. This afternoon’s storm total image from the National Weather Service shows how it added up throughout the day:

I took these pictures this morning of clouds rolling through in advance of the rain we received.

Thanksgiving Day 2010 Temperatures

A change in the weather is on it’s way. Temperatures in this part of Texas started warm but later today will be dropping twenty to thirty degrees…perfect holiday weather! I hope everyone is having a happy thanksgiving day!

Cloudburst

Leaving work today, I caught the following cloud images with rain showers visible just below the clouds. What was interesting was how clear the sky was in the immediate surrounding area.

After I got home, I saved a Wunderground.com image of the NEXRAD Local Radar at the time I took the photo. You can see the red radar echo of the cloud formation I captured in the photograph just below where it says “Phoenix” on the map.

World Sunlight Map

I came across the World Sunlight Map created by die.net that I thought was interesting. The World Sunlight Map provides a real-time, computer-generated illustration of the earth’s patterns of sunlight and darkness. The clouds are updated every 3 hours with current weather satellite imagery. Now you can watch the sun rise and set over planet Earth from the comfort of your computer screen. I also discovered their Moon Phases gadget that allows you to see and track the current phase of the moon.

I am a self-confessed weather junkie. It is possible this condition could be hereditary as my older sister, Maureen, is even more obsessed than me. She is a trained weather spotter AND is certified with the NWS (that’s the National Weather Service) which basically makes her a weather celebrity.

For people like us, watching weather is entertainment. The Weather Channel is standard fare for us and can be watched for hours on end. You can imagine my surprise when I realized the Weather Channel might be taking advantage of my addiction to anything weather-related.

Weather Channel Accused of Pro-Weather Bias

Does anyone know if there’s a 12-step program for people in our condition?

Perhaps our only hope is a weather intervention.

Day 11, BPP-7: Comparative Progress Pictures

Side-by-Side Progress Pictures #1

Today is one week since my first set of pictures. I thought it might be interesting to compare where I’m at today side-by-side with those I took last Saturday morning.

I’m not going to analyze them too much. For me, I know that most of the improvement is with my right eye. It’s closing just slightly better which really helps with keeping it from drying out.

The pictures in the right column were taken Saturday, April 12th, 2008, with the exception of the side profile smiling photos. I decided to start adding that perspective on Wednesday, April 16th, 2008.

The pictures in the right column were taken today, Saturday, April 19th, 2008.

Day 7, BPP-4: Dry Eye and a Dry Day in the Arizona Desert

Today was dry day here in Arizona. Here are the current readings here in Chandler:

See the time and temperature? 80 degrees at 7:25 in the evening. See the humidity? 9% That’s dry.

Now, you may be thinking , “Yes that’s dry, but you live in the desert. Why do you bring it up?”

Normally, it’s fairly dry. But this is REALLY dry. Everybody’s been complaining of dry eyes and dry sinuses. For me, I’ve been sneezing a lot and had to take extra special care of my eye today. In addition to that, it’s really windy today which only aggravates the situation. My eye patch and the gel eye drops really helped today.

Aside from that, not much else to report today, but I’m doing ok. I’ll write more tomorrow on where I’m at with my BP.

Well, I think I’m going to relax and finish watching American Idol. And Vote for Jason Castro -he’s of Colombian descent, like me. Got to support the heritage right?

We’ve all heard about global warming and the debates over whether or not it’s real. Some say the weather anomalies we’ve seen in recent years are just that, an aberration, or a blip on the radar of the entire historical record of climate patterns. Still, it seems to me that what we’ve witnessed in such a short period of time is kind of troubling. Check out this article from NASA’s environment page:
