The Tumbleweed Tree

Tumbleweed Tree: Chandler, AZ

On Saturday, December 1st, Chandler, Arizona (where I live) had their Annual Tumbleweed Tree lighting. The Tumbleweed Tree is made from between 1500 and 2000 tumbleweeds, gathered from the Chandler area, painted white and wired all together. It stands about 35 feet tall. I learned recently that this has been a Chandler tradition since 1957.

I’ve seen the tree for the last several years as I drive through the downtown area but this year was the first time I was there for the initial lighting. After the “Parade of Lights“, several thousand people gathered and counted down from ten to one when Santa and a council person flipped the switch. Plus, this year, Arizona Public Service changed the lights to low-energy LED lights. Check out how they glow now. Pretty cool, huh?
